Abstract: As one of the pioneer scholars and the discipline leader in China’s desertification research, Liu Shu has devoted long-term efforts to promoting the practice of sand industry in arid and semi-arid areas of China, accumulating a series of experience and achievements. The original title of this article was Review and Reflection, and the title was complemented and fine-tuned when this article was included into the journal. Based on the latest background of the addition of “Soil and Water Conservation and Desertification Combating” as the first-level discipline in the 2022 Chinese edition of the discipline catalog, and her own experience in desert research over 40 years, the author sorts out the experience, reflection and lessons in desert prevention and control since China participated in the global desertification control, and summarizes and reflects on the comprehensive issues of the concept and desertification control. As the discussion on desertification control has been taken to the philosophical level of the relationship between man and nature, the author suggests giving full play to the advantages of natural resources in arid and semi-arid areas at maximum capacity, using another way of thinking to study deserts and using natural science, engineering technology and any other available knowledge to improve the efficiency of solar energy conversion, to explore a win-win solution to economic and ecological benefits.
Key words: Drought, desertification, solar energy, man and nature, ecological civilization
